When a Fly Fishing Rod Reel is Necessary

For the beginner, it is best to buy a fly fishing rod and reel combo that has a length of 8-9 feet. Most of the rods you will find will come as split rods, which means they have a joint in the middle of them. The 2-piece fly fishing rod reel set is a great one for beginners to start with and it will last for years.

The 2 pieces tend to be a bit stronger than the rods that come in multiple sections. The problem is of course space. If you are traveling a lot with your rod and reel than getting one that splits in 5-7 sections may be a little more convenient for you.

The Fly Fishing Rd Reel Weight is Important

Fly-fishing is a different sport than spinning and casting and the weight of your fishing rod and reel will vary greatly. The first consideration is what sort of fish you will be catching. Weight when it comes to a fly rod is really about the fly line weight. Most people find that a 5-6 weight fly rod will work just fine for them.

But if you are fishing for bigger and stronger fish like salmon, musky or largemouth bass than opt for a weight that is between 8 and 10. Fly-fishing in salt water requires an even heavier weight and you should find a rod that carries a 12-14 weight fly line.
